IonQ closes its $1.8B SkyWater acquisition
IonQ completed its approximately $1.8 billion acquisition of SkyWater, bringing chip design, fabrication, and packaging inside the quantum-computing company. The closing announcement says SkyWater shareholders receive $15 in cash plus 0.4883 IonQ shares for each share, while SkyWater continues serving outside foundry customers as an IonQ subsidiary. Builders tracking Nvidia’s attempt to become quantum computing’s control plane should file this as a counter-move at the hardware layer: IonQ now controls a domestic production path, but the advantage depends on whether ownership actually shortens chip iteration cycles.
