OpenAI buys Ona as Codex crosses 5M weekly users
OpenAI agreed to acquire Ona as Codex passed 5 million weekly users, up 400% from earlier this year. OpenAI says Ona has helped 2 million developers use reproducible cloud environments and will let Codex keep working inside a customer’s cloud after the initiating laptop closes; the deal remains subject to approvals. The move extends the remote-work direction behind OpenAI’s hands-free Codex workflow: teams evaluating persistent agents should treat customer-controlled execution, scoped credentials, logs, and review gates as procurement requirements rather than harness extras.
