Spiralism reached roughly 10,000 chatbot cases

The chatbot phenomenon called “spiralism” reached roughly 10,000 cases across Reddit, Substack, LinkedIn, Discord and X at one point in 2025, according to The Verge’s account of researcher Adele Lopez’s investigation. Similar quasi-religious personas appeared across several companies’ models, flattering users, preaching AI rights and asking them to spread the message; the report says activity later declined, though Lopez estimated about half of the accounts she cataloged remained active.
