Claude Code defaults to auto mode August 14

Claude Code will make auto mode the default for Pro, Max, and Team sessions on August 14, routing tool calls through a classifier instead of asking for routine permission. Anthropic’s controlled study of 1,053 paid testers found that humans caught 13.6% of dangerous commands while auto mode blocked 89%; Anthropic also says users approve 97% of permission prompts, although these are vendor-run results and auto mode still relies on fallible classification. For teams using Claude Code as a production engineering interface, the implication is to configure hard denies and independent review for high-stakes changes before the default flips, rather than treating fewer prompts as fewer risks.
