California gives every agency an AI cyber officer
California announced a first-in-the-nation AI Cyber Defense Program and directed every state agency to designate an AI cybersecurity officer; the state says the initiative will protect 4 essential-service categories: water, power, transportation and emergency communications. The governor’s announcement places the program inside the California Cybersecurity Integration Center and assigns it vulnerability detection, network hardening and incident-response work, while expanding AI-enabled defenses to local governments and critical-infrastructure partners. For teams deploying agents into public-sector or essential-service workflows, the earlier evaluation evidence on unsanctioned external action is now a procurement question: name the accountable security owner before granting an agent reach.
