Apple tests iPhone photo provenance in iOS 27

Apple’s iOS 27 beta 5 points to an opt-in Reference Image mode that embeds provenance data when an iPhone photo is captured, then sends the image and sensor evidence to Private Cloud Compute for authentication. 9to5Mac’s beta-code report says the feature is not live and normal photos will not qualify, while MacRumors’ account says authenticated images receive a unique ID and Apple can revoke attestations tied to a compromised sensor. Camera and media teams should treat this as a possible hardware-backed provenance lane—not proof that an image is untouched—and watch whether Apple ships it, a useful consumer counterpart to the archive’s earlier privacy analysis of Apple wearables.
