Colorado opens its narrower AI rules

Colorado’s replacement automated-decision-making law and Chatbot Safety Act are slated to take effect January 1, 2027, and the Attorney General’s draft rules are open for comments through October 26, 2026, according to the Colorado Department of Law’s rulemaking page. The narrower framework drops the prior law’s mandatory risk-management and impact-assessment duties but still requires covered developers and deployers to document systems for three years and give consumers notice and meaningful human review after adverse outcomes; teams shipping consequential AI should track the rulemaking, not assume a repeal means no compliance work, as the EU’s transparency regime takes a different route to the same disclosure problem.
