California advances 24 AI bills

California lawmakers moved 24 of 29 active AI bills through the Aug. 13 appropriations suspense votes, while five were held in committee, according to the Transparency Coalition’s legislative update. Two measures also received final approval and were sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom: one on AI in the State Bar exam and one requiring California State University instructors to be human. The update says 7 states remain in session, so the state-by-state compliance map is still moving. Builders selling or deploying in California should track bills by workflow—customer service, health care, workplace surveillance, and education—rather than treating “AI regulation” as one deadline, alongside the archive’s California AI cyber-defense analysis.
