FDA sets October 19 GenAI device deadline
The FDA opened a discussion paper on generative-AI medical devices and set October 19 as the deadline for public feedback on risk assessment, premarket competency testing, and postmarket monitoring. The agency’s official announcement says the paper is not draft or final guidance, while its discussion-paper page asks manufacturers, clinicians, researchers, and the public to respond through docket FDA-2026-N-7874. Medical-AI teams should treat the proposed two-axis risk framework and clinical-confirmation concept as an early signal about the evidence regulators may soon expect, alongside the archive’s clinical-evidence analysis.
