Google begins a 10,000-flight contrail trial

Google and the UK government launched Operation Blue Skies, a 30-month trial using AI forecasts and small altitude changes to avoid warming contrails across Shanwick airspace, which accounts for roughly 5% of global contrail warming. The consortium says about 10,000 flights will pass through the corridor during trial hours each year, while NATS’ operational plan puts the programme at £5 million and includes independent verification by Imperial College London and Cambridge. For builders, this is a useful reminder that climate AI’s hard problem is not forecast accuracy alone but integration with safety-critical workflows, the same deployment constraint visible in the archive’s account of AI power infrastructure.
