Gemma passes 1B downloads

Google says the Gemma family has surpassed one billion downloads and developers have published more than 100,000 model variants across the community in two years. The company points to deployments from on-device and orbital image analysis to India’s 100-million-download Aarogya Setu 2.0, but downloads remain an adoption signal rather than proof of production quality. Builders comparing permissively licensed models should treat the milestone as ecosystem evidence and revisit the archive’s earlier Gemma 4 licensing and efficiency analysis when deciding whether a local model deserves a pilot.
