CHIVE Finds No Interpretability Uplift
Anthropic’s CHIVE pipeline found that three activation-reading interpretability tools provided no uplift over a transcript-only baseline when predicting whether prompt edits would change model behavior, across thousands of counterfactual investigations, according to the research team’s report. CHIVE samples 30 responses per prompt and runs 5–15 prompt-edit experiments for each investigated behavior; the authors say the negative result is a proxy rather than a verdict on every system-card use case. Safety teams should treat activation explanations as suggestive until an intervention changes behavior predictably, a caution that complements the site’s earlier evidence on evaluation governance.
