Maxio CEO catches a $1,000 agent bill

Maxio CEO Branden Jenkins discovered that a weekend coding session had burned $1,000 in AI tokens through an auto-refilling wallet, according to Fortune’s account of the incident. He says model selection and conversational drift caused much of the waste, while the larger organizational problem was employees’ insecurity about falling behind; Fortune reports that Gartner estimates agentic tasks can use 5× to 30× more tokens than ordinary chatbot exchanges. Teams should put hard spending governors and shared routing guidance around agents before a surprise bill becomes a culture tax, extending the archive’s analysis of agent-token economics.
