Uber automated driver blocking draws €825M GDPR fine

The Dutch data-protection authority fined Uber €824.99 million for automatically deactivating drivers suspected of fraud or carrying low customer ratings between 2018 and 2022, without human assessment, according to the regulator’s decision on automated driver blocking. Uber has appealed, but the operational lesson is already clear: any agent that can cut off income needs a meaningful human checkpoint and an auditable explanation, not a post-hoc support queue — the standard this paper applied to Claude’s new email write actions.
