MCP roadmap makes agent identity a priority

The Model Context Protocol’s updated roadmap puts 5 priority areas on the next release cycle, including standardized agent identity, progressive discovery for large tool catalogs, event-driven messaging, HTTP transport hardening, and better SDKs, according to the MCP maintainers’ roadmap. The project says the current authorization model assumes a person approves access in a browser, while autonomous workloads need workload identity, delegation, and token exchange instead; its progressive-discovery work also addresses the way a 100-tool catalog can degrade selection before a user asks a question. Agent builders should treat identity and tool-surface design as protocol work—not glue code—alongside the archive’s analysis of stateless MCP.
