Claude spends 13 hours reverse-engineering peripherals

A researcher used Claude Opus 5 to reverse-engineer the firmware and update paths of five everyday peripherals in about 13 hours of agent churn, finding serious integrity and access weaknesses across microphones, cameras and lights, according to the documented hardware investigation. The write-up says the work required 98 human prompts over two weeks and produced validated tools against real devices, including a webcam whose recording LED could be disabled; it does not establish a general exploit campaign. Teams that treat USB, Wi-Fi and other peripherals as inert accessories should instead inventory their firmware boundary and network exposure, in line with the archive’s evaluation-security analysis.
