IBM designs a bilingual mainframe processor

IBM is designing a 2-nanometer, 11-core processor running above 5.7GHz whose individual cores can natively execute both Arm and IBM Z instructions, the company announced at Hot Chips. The future Z and LinuxONE systems will also include AI-inference accelerators and an on-chip data-processing unit, according to IBM’s processor announcement; IBM cautions that the roadmap can change. Enterprise architects should file the design beside the archive’s IBM enterprise-AI practice analysis as a possible bridge between Arm-native AI software and mission-critical mainframe workloads, not as a migration option available today.
