Meta opens MetaRoCE for AI-scale Ethernet

Meta announced MetaRoCE, a clean-sheet RDMA transport for AI-scale Ethernet, and said it will release the specification, reference implementation and compliance suite through the Open Compute Project in October. In a 64-node AMD GPU cluster, Meta’s test results show about 86% throughput at 1% packet loss, with linear scaling across up to 4,000 concurrent connections; the design targets million-GPU networks without priority-flow control. Infrastructure teams should file the protocol beside the archive’s analysis of photonics as an AI-factory bottleneck: if multi-vendor implementations hold up, Ethernet’s advantage becomes a resilient software-defined transport, not merely cheaper cabling.
