UK AI campus carries a 1.2M-tonne carbon forecast

Digital Reef’s proposed £14.7 billion East Havering data-center campus in London is forecast to emit about 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 a year at full capacity, with planning papers saying the project is not compatible with a 1.5°C pathway or the UK’s 2050 net-zero target, CIBSE Journal reports from the submitted documents. The same papers estimate more than 72 million tonnes over a 60-year lifespan and 2.65 billion kilowatt-hours of annual electricity use at half load. AI-infrastructure buyers should file the disclosure as a permitting and power-procurement risk: a campus can call its design net-zero while its grid demand still creates a carbon case opponents can litigate, extending the archive’s analysis of the $3 trillion data-center buildout.
