Perplexity puts its agent on the local machine

Perplexity launched Portable Computer, a version of its agent that runs models and tools locally on Nvidia’s DGX Spark before expanding to compatible RTX PCs, according to The Verge’s launch report. The system keeps private work on the machine by default and asks permission before escalating advanced research or reasoning to the cloud; Nvidia’s DGX Spark supplies 128GB of unified memory and can run models up to 200 billion parameters for local inference. The hybrid boundary matters more than the novelty: teams piloting desktop agents should count cloud escalations and review their approval surface, extending the archive’s analysis of local agents as a permission design problem.
