Sony and Warner sue Anthropic over music data

Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music filed a federal complaint against Anthropic on August 28, alleging Claude was trained on and reproduced tens of thousands of their musical compositions and seeking statutory damages of up to $150,000 per willfully infringed work. The 48-page complaint names Anthropic, Dario Amodei, and Benjamin Mann; contemporary filing coverage says the publishers also seek up to $25,000 per alleged removal of copyright-management information. The case is a fresh reminder for teams shipping Claude outputs into products that need provenance: licensing, dataset records, and output controls are now deployment inputs, not legal cleanup.
