Google MAPL finds 84% of methane plumes
Google’s MAPL-EMIT detects 84% of expert-annotated methane plumes and finds about 50% more plausible plumes across roughly 1,100 EMIT granules, according to Google Research’s release. Trained on 3.6 million synthetic plumes, the model also mapped sources at 24 of 25 top-emitting landfills and ships with a global Earth Engine database, Kaggle weights, and GitHub inference library. Climate, energy, and compliance teams should file it as a monitoring layer—not a measurement replacement—because Google still flags false positives as a tradeoff; the archive’s evidence gate for scientific AI makes the same validation burden explicit.
