Brazil defines political deepfakes in 5–2 vote
Brazil’s top electoral court defined political deepfakes in a 5–2 vote, covering realistic AI-generated or manipulated images, voices or speech ahead of the October 4 presidential election. AP’s report says a separate 4–3 vote declined to punish a Bolsonaro campaign video because it appeared at a private party convention before candidacy; the rule still applies to electoral advertising. Campaign and civic-product teams should treat synthetic political media as a provenance-and-labeling problem now, not wait for platform policy after the vote; the paper’s analysis of AI’s midterm super-PAC wave shows why.
