Sanders and Casar introduce AI ban bill

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Greg Casar announced a bill that would permanently ban superintelligent AI, pause advanced-AI development until federal safety rules exist, and expose violators to up to 20 years in prison, according to Sanders’s Sept. 3 release. The proposal also calls for a corporate death penalty and international agreements, but it is not law. OpenAI’s Astra access gate shows why builders should file this as procurement risk: capability thresholds can become distribution policy before they become statute.
