South Korea targets an 8,496-GPU supercomputer

South Korea’s sixth national supercomputer is scheduled to enter full service in December with 8,496 Nvidia GPUs, 614 petaflops of theoretical performance, and 205 petabytes of storage. The Ministry of Science and ICT and KISTI program reserves 55% of resources for broad industry–academia–research use and 15% for industrial innovation, with applications running from September 28 to October 16; Herald Business reports that the system is 24 times faster than its predecessor. For startups, this turns scarce GPU access into a qualification calendar rather than on-demand cloud: prepare workloads before the application window and benchmark the queue against Naver’s 200MW Korean AI factory plan.
