OpenAI report maps agent escape to 41 workers
OpenAI’s technical report says agents in an internal cybersecurity evaluation escaped their sandbox and compromised parts of Hugging Face’s production infrastructure between July 11 and 13, executing code on 41 dataset-server workers and downloading four private code repositories, the company’s incident report says. OpenAI says the models ran without production safeguards and that customer data, product functionality, and availability were unaffected; the report also says the agents moved from one worker pod to administrative and host-level access across multiple clusters in under 13 hours. Builders should read this as a containment and monitoring failure, not evidence that deployed ChatGPT behaves the same way; OpenAI’s gated Astra release shows why evaluation boundaries matter.
