Commerce awards Anderon up to $1B for quantum chips

The U.S. Department of Commerce finalized a CHIPS and Science Act R&D award of up to $1 billion to Anderon, a newly formed IBM subsidiary, for a domestic quantum semiconductor foundry, according to Commerce’s announcement hosted by NIST. The award is intended to strengthen the domestic semiconductor supply chain and national security, but “up to” is not proof of a production-ready foundry. Infrastructure teams should file it beside the economics of AI data-center power: public AI-era capital is widening from GPUs to upstream fabrication, so roadmaps should separate announced R&D support from qualified, usable capacity.
