India makes caller-ID apps share spam reports
India’s telecom regulator now requires caller-ID apps to send users’ spam reports to telecom operators, after Truecaller told TechCrunch users encountered around 42 billion spam calls in 2025. The amended rules also bring automatically dialed or prerecorded AI voice calls under the application-to-person framework: businesses must declare their use and numbers in advance, while operators may charge up to 5 paise per minute; Truecaller’s primary India report records 1,189 crore blocked calls. Builders targeting India should budget for disclosure, reporting, and a consent review before treating automated calling as an ordinary API feature; our analysis of AI tools’ data-for-usage trade shows why useful signals can become governance obligations.
