Apollo reads 600M words of Ancient Greek

Apollo, an Ancient Greek LLM from the Austrian Academy of Sciences and Mistral, is trained on 600 million historical words and will be offered free to academics. Mistral’s case study says the model is aimed at more than 1 million unread Greek papyri and could compress inscription restoration from years to hours; WIRED’s report says Apollo proposes candidate words for scholars rather than replacing them. Scientific-AI builders should treat this as a retrieval-and-review pattern, not autonomous historical truth, much like the archive’s analysis of AI-assisted mathematics.
