NHTSA probes comma.ai after five crashes

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a preliminary investigation into comma.ai devices after five crashes involving stopped or slow-moving vehicles, including three deaths and 11 injuries, according to its investigation notice and Ars Technica’s report. The probe examines aftermarket systems that augment factory driver assistance; it does not establish a defect or assign fault to every incident. Teams considering hands-off driving should log software and hardware versions and treat incident review as deployment evidence, extending our robotaxi deployment economics analysis.
