DOE puts $2B behind an AI-constrained grid
The U.S. Energy Department will spend nearly $2 billion on grid upgrades intended to squeeze more capacity from aging infrastructure as AI data centers push electricity demand higher, the DOE’s SPARK announcement says. The program covers 31 projects across 26 states and is less an AI subsidy than a reminder that inference capacity depends on transmission and distribution work outside a model vendor’s control; the archive’s AI power-demand analysis shows why teams siting compute should price grid lead time alongside GPUs.
