California expands AI rules to workplaces

California signed four workplace-AI bills that require real people to review automated disciplinary or termination decisions, require notice when AI causes a mass layoff, relocation, or termination, and restrict workplace surveillance. The governor’s September 30 announcement also lists new healthcare, provenance, and deepfake protections; implementation details will determine which systems qualify. Builders deploying AI in employment should inventory automated decisions, preserve the human-review path, and record whether AI caused a workforce action, extending the archive’s evidence-first compliance analysis.
